Seasonal Flu Vaccination

With the Flu Season upon us, it is extremely important that we give our bodies the best defence against it, especially if you fall if you fall into one of the ‘at-risk’ groups.

Public health experts have expressed concerns about the upcoming flu season in Europe, and Irish hospitals are being told to prepare for a busy winter after a severe flu season in Australia and New Zealand.
Generally the flu season in Europe replicates that which was had in the Southern Hemisphere so we can expect high levels of flu in Ireland this winter.
Flu Vaccination is strongly recommended for:

  • People aged 65 and over
  • Those with long-term medical conditions such as diabetes, heart, kidney, lung or neurological diseases
  • People whose immune system is suppressed due to disease or treatment
  • People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40
  • Pregnant women (the vaccine can be given at any stage of pregnancy)
  • Residents of nursing homes and other long stay institutions
  • Healthcare Workers & Carers
  • People who have regular contact with poultry, waterfowl or pigs

Seasonal flu can give you any of these symptoms:

  • Sudden fever (a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or above)
  • Dry, chesty cough
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Chills
  • Aching muscles, limb or joint pain
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Sneezing

Your symptoms will usually peak after two or three days and you should begin to feel much better within 5 to 8 days.  A cough and general tiredness may last for two or three weeks.
Washing Hands to Prevent Winter Flu
Finally preventing the spread of germs is the most effective way to slow the spread of flu.  Always:

  • Ensure you wash your hands regularly with soap and water
  • Clean surfaces regularly to get rid of germs
  • Use tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and put used tissues in a bin as soon as possible.
