NEW from Shiseido – Sun Care UV Protective Foundation

Launching on the 7th of April are two new foundations from Shiseido – Global Sun Care UV Protective Compact Foundation SPF 30 (€33) and Global Sun Care UV Protective Liquid Foundation SPF 30.  Both give a natural matte finish and resist perspiration, oil and water, while the UV protection defends against the sun damage that causes ageing.

Shiseido claim that both are long lasting and will stay fresh for hours, and while Shiseido are a brand with a wealth of history and innovation behind them, it’s always good to see what ‘real’ people think – so we gave three of the Global Sun Care UV Protective Compact Foundations to some of our staff to try out – keep reading to see how they got on!

I have really dry skin, so never in a million years would I have thought to go for a compact powder foundation – I was quite skeptical about using this but I’ve recently fallen in love with Shiseido’s Ibuki range, and the brand has a great reputation so I said I’d give it a try.   The compact itself looks great (the blue with yellow button combo is very nice) – and I particularly love that the sponge and mirror are kept separate from the powder – so great for keeping things clean.

The foundation can be applied wet or dry, and because of my dry skin I decided to apply it with a damp sponge.  (I did use a disposable cosmetic sponge for this, as I wanted to keep the sponge supplied with the compact dry so that I could use it for top-ups throughout the day).  Application is really easy – this is a dream to apply and totally buildable.  I applied a light layer all over my face and then just added extra on the places where I needed it – scars and red marks were covered with just two layers.

The finish is gorgeous – soft and satin, and because I just applied one layer, it looked very natural – it also stayed put for the whole workday.  I just needed to apply a very slight top up to my chin (but I think that this has more to do with me touching my face than anything else!).

On my first day wearing this two of my colleagues asked about my foundation – both saying that my skin looked more radiant!  This sealed the deal for me and I’ve now given up my usual liquid foundation for this fab blue compact.  The fact that this is marketed as a summer/holiday product really doesn’t matter to me.  I have been and will continue to use this as my everyday foundation – for me it’s just a bonus that it comes with an SPF 30 and is water resistant!

I normally like to use a cream foundation so I was really surprised by the finish on this powder foundation and its very natural look.  It was exceptionally soft and light on the skin and wears very well throughout the day with no residue left.

It’s so easy and quick to apply, blends well and gives a lovely natural finish.  Can be applied with a dry or damp sponge for flexible coverage.  Has a lightweight feeling and a natural matte look.  I would describe it as a medium coverage but you could apply it with a brush for a lighter coverage.  For me this product is more a day time use.

I like that the sponge is kept in a separate compartment so the powder foundation itself doesn’t get ruined, it also includes a mirror.  The sponge is thick and a good size, don’t like the thin a flimsy sponges as they don’t last.  It is a funky turquoise blue compact that fits in the palm of your hand perfectly.

This is definitely a product I will be bringing with me on my summer holidays this year, the fact that it is water resistant and contains a SPF30 is a bonus.

Although you wouldn’t think it with our current weather patterns for those of us in Ireland Spring has arrived and with the dawning of spring you start to think of summer holidays whether they will be at home or abroad.  As I’m now in my 40’s protecting my skin from UVB/UVA rays has become an obsession so I decided to do a little research to see if I could find a foundation that does all for me during the summer months.  It didn’t take long and I discovered that one of my favourite brands, Shiseido, offers a compact and liquid foundation especially for sun protection.

Both have an SPF 30 to help prevent against sun damage but they are both also water resistant which makes them perfect for those of us who still like to have our war paint on while lying by the pool..  They are easy to apply, blend well, suitable for sensitive skin and go on very smoothly but there are subtle differences between the compact and liquid.

The compact formulation is lightweight and long lasting and gives a matte finish so it will be ideal for those of you with combination an oily skin as well as all other skin types.  However, the finish is amazing.  It’s hard to believe that this powder compact leaves such a velvety long lasting finish on the skin.  You can apply with a brush to give a light finish or with the sponge provided to give a fuller coverage.

The liquid also has a matte finish that is non-transferring and resistant against perspiration, water, oil etc.  Again this is long lasting with a good pigmentation and gives a light to medium coverage whilst maintaining a feeling of barely there make up.  The fluid is more suited for normal to very oily skin and excellent for all outdoor activities.  As with any sun care product if you are out in the sun for long periods of time you will need to re-apply your make up to benefit from the SPF and protect your skin.

My conclusions on both of the above products is that they they are hard working enough to be considered as an all year round foundation rather than just part of your summer regime and I will definitely be keeping these in my make up bag.  At the very least they need to be included in your make up bag for summer!!

Shiseido Global Sun Care UV Protective Compact Foundation and Liquid Foundation will be available at Sam McCauleys Fairgreen Shopping Centre, Carlow; Douglas Court Shopping Centre, Cork and North Main Street, Wexford and online at from 7th April 2014
