It’s that time of year again……Hayfever

Spring is a bit of a funny one – while most of us feel elated at the first sign of sunny weather and the smell of freshly cut grass,  those who suffer from Hayfever will dread the runny nose, itchy watering eyes, sneezing and general feeling of bleugh that comes at this time of the year.

Itchy, watery eyes, runny nose…Summer shouldn’t make you fell bleugh

And believe it or not, 1 in 5 Irish people are estimated to suffer from some degree of hayfever. So with that in mind I asked our Superintendent Pharmacist, Mark about what’s out there to help alleviate the symptoms, and he was good enough to send me on the following:

Hayfever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis as it is known medically, is an allergic reaction to pollen and spores and often leads to the onset of irritating and uncomfortable symptoms, including itchy, watering eyes, runny nose, sneezing and headaches. If you suffer from hayfever you should take pre-emptive action by visiting your local Sam McCauley pharmacist or GP and work out a treatment plan in advance of the high pollen season.

The condition mostly affects the nose, blocking it and making it itchy and runny. Cetrine is an extremely effective treatment and is available in packs of 30 tablets for only €9.99.  Prevalin nasal spray, is available in Sam McCauley Chemists and this lines the inside of the nose, deactivating pollen and addresses all significant hayfever symptoms, including runny nose and itchy watery eyes, without side effects. It can be used from 6 years and up also has the advantage that it can be used by pregnant and breast feeding women.

For those individuals who suffer from swollen or itchy eyes, eye drops can be very effective. Opticrom eye drops contain an anti-histamine and again can be used in conjunction with oral anti-histamine tablets.

The worst days in Ireland for hayfever sufferers are hot, sunny days with light winds and no rain. The better the weather the shorter the pollen season is, but pollen levels will be higher. Ask any of our trained healthcare staff for comprehensive advice on how to deal with Hayfever.

Fans of alternative therapies might be interested in trying Hopi Ear Candling (available at Sam McCauley Beauty Salons) – what might on first impressions look pretty alarming is actually a very relaxing experience! The candle is actually a tube of rolled up linen or cotton which has been impregnated with essential oils, beeswax and honey.  While lying on your side, your therapist will hold the lighted ‘candle’ in your ear, and the combination of heat and essential oils will draw out any impurities and excess fluids and the relaxing treatment may alleviate some of the symptoms associated with hayfever.

But suffering from hayfever doesn’t mean that you have to add the woes of mascara running down your face to the list of yuckiness you’ll be experiencing.  Nowadays, waterproof products are de rigueur for any self respecting cosmetics house and pocket friendly faves, such as Rimmel, Maybelline and L’Oreal, have all released highly rated waterproof mascaras, and one of Rimmels newest releases is Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal (€4.95) – a waterproof, smudge proof and heat proof eyeliner, meaning hayfever doesn’t have to ruin your feline flick!
